The name was originally meant to be changed to Guilford, but was known as “Gilford “due to a clerical error within the incorporation documents. The history of the area lies mainly in farming and agriculture, although the town continued to diversify and soon a thriving diverse community was born.

Summer tourism also played a big part of the growth of the community once the Lake Shore Railroad began running.
